Abt 1752 John Collyer born
The History of Betty Barnes published by D Wilson & T Durham in 1753. According to Joyce Grossman (1999) this book was mis-attributed to Sarah Fielding in Samuel Halkett & John Laing, A Dictionary of Anonymous and Pseudonymous Publications in the English Language, (3:65) and in Andrew Block, The English Novel 1740-1850: A Catalogue (74). Grossman states that no corroborative evidence was cited by Halkett or Block. Grossman attributes this novel to Mary (Mitchell) Collyer, citing Ralph Griffiths, editor of The Monthly Review when this novel was published. She states that a margin note made by Griffiths stated “by Mrs Collier, wife of Jos Collier.” As similar annotations by Griffiths have proved correct, Grossman believes this evidence to be reliable.
