Thanks Darren. I don't know of a connection between your Hewitts and mine, but you never know!

Yes, it was very sad about Charles - and all the other poor souls who died in action in the Great War. I saw an item on tv last week about the battle of Arras. The British army built tunnels under the German lines, which took 6 months, and the tunnels are still there today. Just about the time when Charles died the soldiers emerged from the tunnels in a surprise attack on the Germans, and as you may imagine, many of them were killed. I wonder whether Charles was one of these men. As I watched the amazing film taken by the tv crew in the tunnels I couldn't help wondering whether Charles had been in them. Incidentally, some years ago I was in touch with a member of the Hewitt family who said that it seemed appropriate for Charles to be commemmorated on the memorial outside the Pleasant Retreat, as he spent quite a lott of time in that hostelry!
